RADIO - POOR RECEPTION OR STATIC ON AM RADIO BAND

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1989-90 MARK VII

ISSUE:
Poor AM Radio reception and static may be caused by corrosion in the antenna cable connection at the power antenna. This corrosion may be due to a water leak where the power antenna mounts to the rear quarter panel.

ACTION:
Inspect the antenna cable connector for corrosion and, if required, replace the power antenna assembly and antenna cable. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

Figure 1:

1. Lower the antenna.

2. Open the trunk and remove the interior trim to gain access to the power antenna.

3. Remove the nut securing the antenna to the top of the quarter panel and remove stanchion, Figure 1.

4. Disconnect the power antenna motor electrical connector and antenna cable connector.

5. Remove the bolt retaining the antenna motor and bracket in position. Remove the power antenna assembly.

6. Inspect the antenna cable connector on the antenna for corrosion, Figure 1.

7. If corrosion is present, install a new power antenna assembly (E6LY-18850-A) and antenna cable (E5LY-18812-A).

NOTE:
ONLY REPLACE THE POWER ANTENNA ASSEMBLY AND CABLE IF THEY ARE CORRODED.

8. Apply a 1/4" (6.35 mm) of RTV clear sealer (D6AZ-19562-AA) around the base of the antenna assembly, just below the threads.

9. Place the antenna assembly in position, Figure 1.

a. Install the antenna retaining bolt.

b. Install the antenna stanchion and nut assembly.

c. Tighten the nut to 40 lb.in. (4.5 N-m).

10. If replacement is necessary, install, but do not connect, a new antenna cable.

11. Fill the antenna cable connector on the power antenna with silicone dielectric compound (D7AZ-19A331-A).

12. Install the antenna cable connector to the power antenna connector. Connect the power antenna motor electrical connector.

13. Install the interior trim in the trunk.

14. Check the antenna and radio for proper operation.
