^ CROSSMEMBER - NO. 3 - "SQUEAKING" NOISE

^ NOISE - "SQUEAK" FROM NO. 3 CROSSMEMBER

LINCOLN-MERCURY:

ISSUE:
A "squeaking" noise from beneath the vehicle may be coming from the No. 3 crossmember. The crossmember insulator bushing bolts may come in contact with the side of the No. 3 crossmember.

ACTION:
Install two (2) new service bushing insulators and attaching bolts. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

Figure 1:

1. Remove the horizontal bolts from the No. 3 crossmember and body brackets, Figure 1.

2. Remove and throw away the vertical bolts and nuts from the No. 3 crossmember, Figure 1.

3. Remove and throw away the end bushing insulators (RH & LH).

4. Install the new bushing insulators (F1LY-6E094-A, RH & LH), Figure 1.

a. Make sure that the steel plate on the bushing is on the top surface.

b. Ensure that the bushing holes are concentric with the No. 3 crossmember bolt clearance holes.

c. Make sure that the notch in the steel bushing is pointing rearward on the RH side and forward on the LH side.

d. Make sure the rubber "snap lock" of the No. 3 crossmember is engaged.

5. Using new vertical bolts (N803761-S2) and attaching nuts (N802068-S2), loosely install the aluminum blocks to the No. 3 crossmember, Figure 1.


NOTE:
THE NOTCHES ON THE NEW VERTICAL BOLTS MUST BE ALIGNED WITH THE NOTCHES ON THE BUSHINGS.

6. Install the No. 3 crossmember assembly into the vehicle by inserting the horizontal bolts into the body brackets. DO NOT TORQUE.

7. Tighten the vertical and horizontal bolts to 35-50 lb.ft. (47-68 N-m) in the following sequence.

^ RH vertical bolt

^ LH vertical bolt

^ RH horizontal bolt

^ LH horizontal bolt
