ISSUE: Engine exhaust noise may be transmitted through the steering column boot bearing. This is caused by marginal sealing between the boot bearing and steering column insulator collar.
ACTION: Apply butyl tape around the boot bearing. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
Figure 1:
1. Remove the two (2) nuts securing the boot to the insulator collar, Figure 1.
Figure 2:
2. Slide the boot up the extension shaft away from the collar, Figure 2.
Figure 3:
3. Cut a 6 5/8" (168.3 mm) long piece of 1/4" (6.35 mm) diameter butyl tape (D9AZ-19562-A). Wrap it around the boot bearing to create a butt joint with both ends, Figure 3.
4. Slide the boot into position in the collar. Tighten to 4.5-6.4 N-m.
CAUTION: OVERTIGHTENING WILL RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE STEERING COLUMN COLLAR.
