Transmission Inspection
1. Raise the vehicle.2. Examine the transmission case near the area of the vent assembly for any indication of leakage from the vent.
NOTE: LEAKAGE, OR VENTING OF FLUID, IS AN INDICATION OF POSSIBLE WATER CONTAMINATION.
3. If there is no indication of external leakage, remove the transmission oil pan and examine the fluid for evidence of water contamination.
NOTE: WATER CONTAMINATION CAN TURN THE FLUID COLOR FROM RED TO A "MILKY" OR "TOMATO SOUP" APPEARANCE.
4. If either of the above conditions exists, proceed as follows:
a. Completely drain the transmission and converter. Refer to the 1990 Lincoln Town Car Shop Manual, Section 17-20 for draining and refilling details.
b. Completely flush the cooler and cooler lines using Rotunda Cleaner (014-00028) or equivalent.
5. Check the transmission for small amounts of water:
a. Observe the fluid while it is draining from the pan for traces of water.
b. Look for small amounts of water which tend to collect in the bottom of the pan. They will appear as "milky" streaks as the last of the fluid is drained.
c. If small amounts of water are observed, completely drain and clean the pan. It will not be necessary to completely drain the transmission.
6. When any of the above conditions exist, proceed as follows:
a. Remove the main control assembly. Refer to the 1990 Lincoln Town Car Shop Manual, Section 17-20 for service details.
b. Replace the upper (FOAZ-7D100-A) and lower (E9SZ-7C155-A) separator plate gaskets.
CAUTION: WATER CONTAMINATION MAY CAUSE THE GASKETS TO STICK TO THE SEPARATOR PLATE. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SCRAPE GASKET MATERIAL FROM THE SEPARATOR PLATE. IF THE GASKETS CANNOT BE REMOVED, ORDER FOVY-7C155-A KIT WHICH CONTAINS THE SEPARATOR PLATE AND GASKETS.
c. Disconnect the neutral start switch connector. Examine and clean the connector as necessary.
d. Install a new neutral start switch, (FOVY-7A247-A). Refer to 1990 Town Car Shop Manual, Section 17-20 for service details.
e. Apply grease (DOAZ-19554-AA) or equivalent to the terminals on the switch.
f. Re-connect the neutral start switch.
7. Lower the vehicle.
8. Add the required amount of Mercon R fluid. Use the dipstick to check the fluid level.
9. Adjust the TV pressure. Refer to the 1990 Town Car Shop Manual, Section 17-20 for service details.
