This TSB article is being. republished in its entirety to include shoe and lining kits for 1992-93 Crown Victoria Police Vehicles and to make certain that various surfaces are checked to be free of rust.
ISSUE:
Premature front brake rotor wear may be caused by the use of semimetallic and organic brake lining material. This may cause brake roughness which may result in vibration of the brake pedal, steering column, or body of the car in general during brake application. Roughness can also be caused by lining material transfer from non-metallic, non-asbestos pads under certain conditions, or from rust and corrosion build-up.
ACTION:
Determine the origin of the vibration and, if necessary, replace the front brake linings and rotors. If the condition persists, replace the rear brake linings and rotors. Refer to the following procedure for service details. Be sure that brake booster application is not present on Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) equipped vehicles as mentioned in TSB 92-19-2.
1. Determine if the vibrations are coming from the front of the car through ride evaluation during brake application.
2. If the front of the car is the source of vibration, replace the following components:
^ Front brake linings (F3AZ-2001-A) for all non-police vehicles.
^ Front brake linings (F2AZ-2001-A) for all police vehicles.
^ Rotors (F1VY-1125-A) for all 1991-1992 Town Cars, all 1992-1993 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis
NOTE:
MAKE CERTAIN THAT HUB FACE IS FREE FROM RUST ON (F1VY-1125-A) FRONT APPLICATIONS.
^ Hub and rotor assemblies (FOVY-2C202-A) for 1990 Town Cars with Anti-Lock Brakes
^ Hub and rotor assemblies (E8AZ-1102-A) for all 1990-1991 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis and all 1990 Town Cars without Anti-Lock Brakes
Refer to the 1993 Lincoln Town Car, Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis Service Manual, Section 06-03, for removal and installation procedures.
3. If roughness is still present, replace the rear brake linings (F2VY-2200-A) and rotors (F1VY-2C026-A).
NOTE:
MAKE CERTAIN THAT AXLE FLANGE MOUNTING SURFACES ARE FREE FROM RUST.
Refer to the 1993 Lincoln Town Car, Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis Service Manual, Section 06-04, for removal and installation procedures.
4. Re-evaluate the vehicle for brake roughness.
