^ INTERIOR TRIM - VINYL COVER SEPARATION AT DOOR ARMREST

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1990-94 TOWN CAR

ISSUE:
Some vehicles may require a high effort to open the armrest door. This is due to an interference between the armrest door and the door trim panel which causes its vinyl skin to separate.

ACTION:
Repair loose vinyl skin using Instant Adhesive (E8AZ-19554-A), and eliminate the interference condition. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Remove door trim panel. Refer to the appropriate Town Car Service Manual, Section 45-03 for 1990-91 or Section 01-05 for 1992-94 model years.

2. Remove three (3) screws holding armrest/door and remove armrest/door (Figure 1).

3. Remove one (1) screw from door handle pull cup (Figure 2). Refer to Step 4 before removing pull cup.

4. From backside of trim panel, remove three (3) pal nuts from pull cup and remove pull cup (Figure 3).

5. From backside of panel, straighten twelve (12) retaining tabs on applique (Figure 4).

6. Four (4) of the applique retainer tabs have one-way push-on retainers. To remove retainers, squeeze the retainers gently as shown while pulling lightly up on the pliers (Figure 4). Retainer will release when sufficient squeeze force is applied.

NOTE:
SQUEEZE PLIERS JUST ENOUGH TO RELEASE THE RETAINER. EXCESSIVE FORCE WILL DISTORT OR BREAK THE RETAINER.

7. Remove applique (Figure 5).

8. Apply Instant Adhesive (E8AZ-19554-A) to loose vinyl skin and foam (Figure 6).

9. Install applique and pull cup.

10. Install armrest/door. Check for binding between armrest and trim panel. If any resistance is felt due to rubbing against trim panel, then the armrest must be shimmed to prevent future vinyl skin separation from the trim panel.

a. Check gap between closed armrest/door and trim panel at front, middle and rear. Shim as required to obtain a minimum gap of 2 mm.

b. Use suitable washers (three (3) maximum per screw) as shims between the armrest and the trim panel to eliminate binding (Figure 1). The difference in the number of shims between adjacent screws should not exceed one (1); for example: two (2) at rear screw, one (1) at middle screw, and none (0) at the front screw. Washers should be approximately 10 mm diameter and 1 mm thick; recommend using E63OO21-S208 or similar washer.
