WINDOW-FRONT AND REAR DOORS-WINDOW REGULATOR MOTOR DRIVE REPLACEMENT

ISSUE: The door window regulator drive motor replacement procedure, with the window in the down position, is not published in the 1990 Town Car Shop Manual. If the assembly fails and the bottom of the glass is below the motor and drum housing, the assembly cannot be serviced unless the door inner panel is modified.
ACTION: Use the following service procedure to replace the door window regulator drive motor when the window is in the down position.
1. Remove the door trim panel and watershield. Refer to the 1990 Town Car Shop Manual, Section 45-03 for service details.
2. Mark off three (3) locations and drill three (3) holes (1/2" or 12.7 mm diameter) in door inner panel as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
CAUTION: BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO DRILL THROUGH THE MECHANISM BEHIND THE DOOR INNER PANEL.

3. Remove the three (3) motor attaching screws with a 1/8" square bit screw driver through the drilled holes as shown in Figures 3 and 4.
4. Working through the large access hole in the door inner panel, move the door window regulator drive motor (with drum housing and cover) off the motor mounting bracket.
CAUTION: BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO STRIKE OR SCRATCH THE GLASS.

5. Separate the drive motor from the drum housing and cover as shown in Figures 5 and 6.
6. Raise the glass with your hand to the full up position and secure it with a clamp.
7. Disconnect the motor wire from the wire harness and remove the drive motor.
8. Replace the entire regulator assembly. Refer to the 1990 Town Car Shop Manual, Section 42-05 for rear doors and Section 42-08 for front doors.
9. Put the motor in the door through the access hole.
10. Assemble the drive motor to the drum housing and cover. If necessary, rotate the drive motor to align the mounting holes in the motor with the holes in the drum housing and cover.
11. Position the drive motor (with the drum housing and cover) to the motor mounting bracket.
12. Install three (3) attaching screws. Tighten the screws to a torque of 49-62 lb.in. (5.5-7.0 N.m).
13. Re-connect the motor wire to the wire harness.
14. Remove the clamp retaining the glass.
15. Re-install the watershield and door trim panel.
