Early Production
DESCRIPTIONThis speed control system consists of a servo assembly, speed control amplifier, vehicle speed sensor, stoplamp switch, steering wheel switches, horn relay, vacuum dump valve and reservoir. On Town car models, the amplifier is located behind the glove compartment. On Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis models, the amplifier is located in the lower area of the instrument panel between the steering column and transmission tunnel, mounted on the same bracket as the chime and wiper control module. A vacuum reservoir mounted to the front bumper, supplies vacuum to the servo during periods of high engine load. Vacuum is fed from the reservoir by a plastic tube attached to the 14290 wire harness. A three-port check valve behind the servo connects the reservoir and manifold check lines and prevents reservoir vacuum from leaking back to the engine.
OPERATION
System Activation
To operate the speed control system, vehicle speed must be greater than 30 mph. At this time, the system is activated and is ready to accept a set speed signal by pressing the ON and SET ACCEL switches on the steering wheel. This will set speed at its current speed until a new speed is set by the operator, the brake pedal is depressed or the OFF switch is depressed.
Decreasing Set Speed
Vehicle speed may be reduced by applying the brake pedal and the resetting the speed using the system activation method or by depressing the COAST switch. When the vehicle is slowed to the desired speed, the COAST switch is released and the new vehicle speed is set automatically. If the vehicle speed is reduced below the minimum operating speed, the operator must manually increase the speed and reset the system.
Increasing Set Speed
Vehicle set speed may be manually increased at any time by depressing the accelerator until the higher speed is reached and stabilized, then depressing and releasing the SET ACCEL button.
Set speed can also be increased by depressing the SET ACCEL button and holding it in that position. The vehicle will then automatically increase speed. When desired speed has been obtained and the button has been released, that new speed will be maintained.
Resume
When the speed control system is deactivated by depressing the brake pedal, the set speed prior to system deactivation may be reset by momentarily depressing the RESUME button. The RESUME function of the system will not function if the system is deactivated using the OFF switch, or if vehicle speed has been reduced below the minimum speed of 30 mph.
