Starter Motor: Service and Repair

When servicing starter or performing any maintenance in the area of starter, note heavy gauge input lead connected to starter solenoid is Hot at all times. Ensure protective cap is installed over terminal and is replaced after service. When battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the EEC processor relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles or more to relearn strategy.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Disconnect starter cable and push on connector from starter solenoid. When disconnecting hard-shell connector at ``S'' terminal, grasp plastic shell and pull off. Do not pull on wire.
4. Remove starter motor attaching bolts, then remove starter.
5. Remove lower attaching bolt.
6. Reverse procedure to install. Torque starter upper and lower bolts to 16-19 ft. lbs.
