Keyless Entry: Description and Operation

Door Lock/Unlock Feature

The doors may be locked or unlocked using the door lock switches, door keypad or the transmitter. When the door lock switch is held toward lock, ground is applied to the 119 (PK/Y) circuit. The RKE Module then applies voltage to the 117 (PK/BK) circuit, causing the door lock motors to lock the doors. When the door lock switch is held toward the unlock, ground is applied to the RKE Module via the 120 (PK/LG) circuit. The RKE Module then applies voltage to the 118 (PK/O) circuit, causing the door lock motors to unlock the doors.

Entering the factory permanent code or the owner 5 alternate code causes the RKE Module to apply voltage to the driver's door lock motor via circuit 163 (R/O). Pressing the 3/4 button within 5 seconds causes the RKE Module to apply voltage to circuit 118 (PK/O), causing the door lock motors to unlock the passenger door.

Pressing the transmitter unlock button causes the RKE Module to apply voltage to the driver's door lock motor via circuit 163 (R/O). Pressing the transmitter unlock button a second time within 5 seconds causes the RKE Module to apply voltage to circuit 118 (PK/O), causing the door lock motors to unlock the passenger door.

Luggage Compartment Unlock

The luggage compartment may be locked or unlocked using the door lock switches, door keypad or the transmitter. Pressing the door keypad 5/6 button within 5 seconds of unlocking the driver's or passenger's door, causes the RKE Module to apply voltage to the 118 (PK/O) circuit, causing the door lock motors to unlock the luggage compartment. Pressing the transmitter TRUNK button once (twice on some vehicles) causes the RKE Module to apply voltage to the trunk release solenoid via the 84 (P/Y) circuit.

Automatic Door Lock Feature

The automatic door lock (Autolock) feature allows the RKE Module to automatically lock all the doors when the following conditions are met:

1. Autolock feature is activated.
2. Driver's seat is occupied.
3. All doors are closed.
4. Ignition switch is in RUN.
5. Gear selector passes through REVERSE.

Autolock activation or deactivation is accomplished by performing the following steps.

1. Enter the permanent five digit code into the keypad.
2. Press and hold the 7/8 button within 5 seconds of performing step 1.
3. Press and release the 3/4 button within 5 seconds of performing step 2, while still holding the 7/8 button.
4. Release the 7/8 button within 5 seconds of performing step 3

When the ignition switch is in RUN, voltage is applied to the RKE Module via the 298 (P/O) circuit. When the driver's seat is occupied, ground is applied to RKE Module via the 177 (W) circuit. When all doors are closed the ground signal is removed from the 465 (W/LB) circuit. If all the above conditions are met, The RKE Module looks for a momentary ground on PRNDL input via the 14n (BK/PK) circuit. When the RKE Module sees this signal, it momentarily applies voltage to the door lock motors via the 117 (PK/BK) circuit. The door lock motors then lock the doors.

Also, after the above Autolock operation, all the doors will be relocked whenever a passenger door is opened then closed. The doors would not be relocked if either the ignition is off at the time or the driver's seat switch is open for 3 seconds or more while the door is open.

Theft Deterrent Control

The RKE Module can arm, disarm, activate and deactivate the anti-theft system. The RKE Module is tied to the theft deterrent wiring so that when operation of the door locks is requested, the anti-theft module interprets these signals and behaves just as if the system was being controlled manually.

Panic Alarm Feature

When the PANIC button on the RKE transmitter is pressed, the RKE Module applies a pulsing ground signal to the 6 (Y/LG) circuit and a pulsing voltage signal to the 14 (BR) circuit. This forces the horns to beep and the exterior lamps to flash. The RKE Module will continue this action for a maximum of 3 minutes, or until PANIC is pressed again, or the ignition is turned on.

Illuminated Entry Feature

The illuminated entry feature may be activated by lifting a door handle or by pressing any transmitter key. When either of these is performed, the RKE Module applies Battery voltage to the interior lamps and keyhole illumination lamps via the 53 (BK/LB) circuit, for 25 seconds, provided the ignition switch is OFF. Turning the ignition switch ON will turn the interior lamps immediately off.

Battery Saver Feature

The Battery Saver function provides a 45 minute time-out of the interior lamps and other courtesy lamps (trunk, engine compartment, vanity, map and glove box) after the ignition is switched off. This feature will prevent battery drainage if doors are left open or if either the courtesy lamps are left on or their switches are bad. The 45 minute timer can be restarted either by pulling a front door handle, using the key pad or transmitter, or opening any door or the trunk. Turning the ignition ON prevents the Battery Saver from timing out, providing continuous power to the courtesy lamp circuits.

The trunk switch will only restart the 45 minute Battery Saver timer one time after the time-out has occurred. Further activation of the switch after the second 45 minute time-out will be ignored unless the vehicle's ignition is turned on and then off. This feature will prevent drainage of the battery under two potential scenarios: (1) when the trunk lamp switch is bad (stuck closed), or (2) when shipping the vehicle at an angle causes the switch to repeatedly open and close.

Transmitter Programming

Before any of the Remote features will operate, the RKE Module must be programmed to accept signals from the transmitters. The RKE Module may be programmed to accept signals from up to four transmitters. The following steps must be performed in order to program or reprogram the RKE Module to respond to the selected transmitters.

1. Put the ignition switch in RUN or ACCY and momentarily jumper the two program connector terminals. The system will respond by locking and then unlocking all doors
2. Press any button on the transmitter. All doors will lock and then unlock to verify transmitter signal acceptance.
3. Repeat step 2 to program the RKE Module to accept up to four transmitter signals
4. Turn the Ignition switch to OFF. All doors will then lock and unlock.
5. Operate a button on each transmitter to verify that the system has been programmed successfully.
