Article No.

SHEET METAL - UPPER QUARTER PANELS - "SINK MARKS" APPEAR IN HOT WEATHER - VEHICLES BUILT TO 6/1/93

FORD:
1993 THUNDERBIRD

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1993 CONTINENTAL, COUGAR, MARK VIII

ISSUE:
"Sink marks" may appear in the upper area of the quarter panel during hot weather. This occurs because heat causes the foam bonded to the inner surface of the outer quarter panel to shrink, pulling the panel inward resulting in a "sink mark".

ACTION:
Separate the foam from the quarter panel so the quarter panel will return to its normal position and the "sink marks" will disappear. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Remove the rear seat cushion and back. Refer to the appropriate 1993 Service Manual, Sections 01-10 or 01-10A, for service details.

2. Remove the seat D ring bolt and cover if the vehicle is equipped with active restraints.

3. Remove the quarter trim panel on the Mark VIII and Thunderbird/Cougar, angel wing on the Continental. Refer to the appropriate 1993 Service Manual, Section 01-05, for service details.

4. Insert a hacksaw blade through the access hole, shown in Figures 1 and 2, between the outer quarter panel and the foam.

NOTE:
DIG OUT ANY FOAM BLOCKING THE HOLE FIRST.

5. Saw the foam to release it from the quarter panel until the "sink mark" disappears. The quarter panel will return to its normal position when separated from the foam.

6. Use a vacuum to remove any loose foam chunks from the vehicle.

7. Reinstall the quarter trim panel and seats.

8. Reinstall the D ring. Tighten the bolt to 30-40 N-m (22-30 lb.ft.).
