Diagnostic Procedures Overview

The anti-lock brake electronic control module is capable of performing a self-test using Rotunda Super Star II tester 007-00041 or equivalent. If the Super Star tester is not available, the anti-lock Quick Check sheet can be used as described.

The anti-lock control module monitors system operation and stores up all defined service codes in its memory. It is important to understand that the control module Cannot recognize some failures therefore if a problem exists and no service codes are stored by the control module, other diagnostic steps must be followed. The module cannot store a service code if there is no power to the module. This fault code can be found by using Quick-Check Tests.

A 20 series code will override any other stored code and will not allow other codes to be output if failure exists while the Self-Test is being run. If failure is intermittent or if code was left in the computer due to improper erasing procedures, the code will be output during Self-Test but the next code will also be output.

Star Tester Connection & Battery Check

1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position.
2. Locate Star tester connector on engine compartment right shock tower.
3. Connect Super Star tester electrical connector to vehicle connector. One multi-pin connector is used.
4. Turn power switch on righthand side of Super Star tester to On. A steady 00 or a blank screen will appear signifying that the tester is ready to start the Self-Test and receive service codes. If the message LO BAT appears in the upper lefthand corner of the read-out display and stays On, replace the Super Star tester's 9 volt battery before continuing with the Self-Test. The message LO BAT will appear momentarily when the power switch is turned to the Off.
5. With the ignition switch in the Off position, push the Self-Test button in the center of the Super Star II tester. Push the button again. This deactivates the Self-Test sequence.
6. If the Super Star tester passes the Self-Test (a 00 or blank screen with button in TEST position), proceed with the On-Board Self-Test. If any service codes appear during the Self-Test, refer to the On-Board Self-Test Service Code Index.

On Board Self-Test Procedure

NOTE: Ford DOES NOT provide procedures other than those described to retrieve or clear trouble codes.

The anti-lock brake system is capable of self-diagnostic, however the module as received from manufacturing is equipped with a stored error code 61. This will affect service procedure.
The error codes can be retrieved from the computer as follows:
1. Connect Super Star II tester to connector located in engine compartment.
2. Turn on Super Star II tester and latch button down in Test position.
3. Turn ignition switch to Run position.
4. Read first code output. After approximately 15 seconds the next code will be output. Leave button latched until all codes are output. Ensure all codes are written down.

If check Anti-Lock Brake warning lamp is on or intermittently comes on, refer to DIAGNOSTIC CHARTS. The diagnostic procedure is as follows:
1. If first code received is in the 20's and no other code is received, service the indicated fault. No other codes can output if a code 20's fault exists. After servicing the indicated 20's code, repeat procedure for retrieving error codes.
2. If there are more codes stored in the computer's memory, no codes will erase until all codes have been output by the Super Star Tester II, all faults have been serviced and the vehicle is driven about 25 mph. This means if a 20's code originally existed and was serviced, it can be ignored when running the Self-Test the second time.
3. If Code 61 is received with any other code, ignore code 61 and service other indicated faults. If after correcting all other indicated the Check Anti-Lock Brake lamp is still on, service indicated Code 61 fault.
4. If no code, or only a Code 10 is received, use the Anti-Lock Quick Tests Checks since some faults are not recognized and retained in the computer memory.
