Fuel Injector: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and secure it out of the way.

NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the powertrain control module relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles or more to relearn the adaptive strategy.

2. Remove fuel cap.

3. Release pressure from fuel system.

4. Remove upper intake manifold.

5. Carefully remove electrical harness connectors from individual injectors.

6. Remove fuel injection supply manifold assembly.

7. Grasping injector body, pull up gently while rocking injector from side to side.

8. Inspect injector O-rings (two per injector) for signs of deterioration. Replace as required.

9. Inspect injector body, end cap and washer for signs of dirt and deterioration. Replace as required. If hat is missing, look for it in the intake manifold.

INSTALLATION

1. Replace and lubricate the two injector O-rings on each injector with clean engine oil.

NOTE: Never use silicone grease. It will clog the injectors.

2. Install fuel injectors. Use a light, twisting, pushing motion to install them.


3. Install fuel injection supply manifold assembly.

4. Install electrical harness connectors to injectors.

5. Install upper intake manifold.

6. Install fuel cap at tank.

7. Connect battery ground cable.

8. Turn key ON/OFF several times without starting engine to check for fuel leaks.

NOTE: Check all connections at fuel rails, push connect fittings, etc.

9. Start engine and warm to operating temperature. Check for leaks.
