Ignition Switch: Service and Repair
REMOVAL1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Turn lock cylinder key to RUN position.
3. Place a 1/8 inch punch in hole in trim shroud under lock cylinder.
4. Depress retaining pin with punch and remove lock cylinder by pulling outward.

5. Remove tilt release lever by removing one socket head capscrew.
6. Remove four instrument panel lower cover retaining screws, then the lower cover.
7. Remove three steering column shroud attaching screws, then the shroud.
8. Remove four steering column to support bracket retaining bolts, then lower column.
9. Remove three screws from diverter plate, then the diverter plate from column.
10. Disconnect ignition switch electrical connector.
11. Remove two tamper resistant screws retaining ignition switch, then remove the switch.
INSTALLATION
Fig. 2 Ignition Switch Adjustment:
1. Ensure ignition switch is in the RUN position by rotating switch fully clockwise to start position and releasing slowly.
2. Install ignition switch and cover assembly, then two retaining screws. Torque screws to 30-48 in lb.
3. Connect ignition switch electrical connector.
4. Position diverter plate on column and install three attaching screws. Torque screw to 30-48 in lb.
5. Align steering column mounting holes with support bracket, install four nuts and torque to 15-25 ft lb.
6. Install steering column shrouds.
7. Install instrument panel lower cover.
8. Install tilt release lever, then capscrew. Torque to 6-8 ft lb.
9. Check operation of tilt column through its entire range and ensure there is no interference with instrument panel.
10. Connect battery ground cable.
11. Check column functions as follows:
a. With shift lever in PARK position and ignition lock cylinder in LOCK position, ensure steering wheel locks.
b. With shift lever in DRIVE position and ignition lock cylinder in RUN position, rotate lock cylinder toward LOCK position until it stops. Ensure engine electrical is OFF and steering wheel does not lock.
c. Rotate ignition lock cylinder counterclockwise and check for accessory power.
d. Place shift lever in PARK position, then rotate ignition lock cylinder clockwise to the START position and ensure starter is energized.
