Compressor/Pump: Description and Operation

A single cylinder piston type electrically operated air compressor, mounted on the RH fender apron, supplies the required air pressure for system operation.

A regenerative type dryer is attached to the compressor manifold assembly. All airflow during the compression or vent cycles, pass through the dryer. A vent solenoid, located on the compressor manifold, controls air exhaustion.

Air required for leveling the vehicle is distributed from the air compressor to each air spring by four nylon air lines which start at the compressor dryer and terminate at the individual air springs. The dryer is a common pressure manifold for all four air lines. The air lines are color coded to identify to which air spring they are attached.

NOTE: The compressor relay, compressor vent solenoid and all air spring solenoids incorporate internal diodes for electrical noise suppression and are polarity sensitive. Care must be taken when servicing these components not to switch the battery positive and ground cables or system/component damage will result. When charging the battery, the ignition switch must be in the OFF position if the air suspension switch is in the ON position or damage to the air compressor relay or motor may occur.
