^ NOISE - "BUZZING" SOUND FROM REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY DOOR LOCK MOTOR

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1993 MARK VIII

ISSUE:
The door lock motors may run continuously causing a "buzzing" noise. The customer will be able to exit the vehicle, but may get locked out of the vehicle with the engine running. There may be continuous "pull-down" of door locks or the alarm may sound inadvertently. These concerns may be caused by...

^ Water entry into the luggage compartment in several areas which leaks onto/into the remote keyless entry module (RKE). This creates an electrical short causing false alarm horns.

^ The anti-theft hood switch is positioned too low causing activation of the alarm system.

^ Electrical noise in the door ajar switch causes a signal to be sent to the RKE module.

^ Water leakage into the door ajar switch produces corrosion and a short condition which activates the alarm system.

ACTION:
Use the following procedure to identify cause of the concern and service as required.

ALARM SOUNDS INADVERTENTLY

Carefully investigate the customer's concern to determine if the fault is in the Anti-Theft System or the RKE system. If the concern is a false activation of the alarm system, a determination of the type of alarm must be made (panic alarm versus anti-theft). When the alarm sounds, observe the Anti-Theft Warning Indicator light in the instrument cluster.

^ If the lamp is flashing, the concern is in the Anti-Theft System.

^ If the lamp is off, the concern is in the RKE System.

ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM PROCEDURE

1. Follow the normal diagnostic procedures outlined in the 1993 Mark VIII Service Manual, Section 01-14C, to determine the affected area.

2. If diagnostics lead to replacement of the hood switch located on the right hand side of the engine compartment, install a new hood switch (F3LY-19A434-B). Refer to TSB 93-19-6 for further service details.

3. If diagnostics lead to replacement of the Door Ajar Switch, install a new switch (F3LY-14018-B). Refer to TSB 93-12-7 for installation details. Also replace the Remote Keyless Entry Module with a new module (F3LY-15K602-A) that has the protective cover on it.
