ANTI-THEFT PROTECTION SYSTEM - ALARM ACTIVATED IN ERROR

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1993 MARK VIII

ISSUE:
The anti-theft protection system alarm may be activated in error because water may have entered the door ajar switch.

ACTION:
Install new door ajar switches which include double "O" rings and improved lubrication to minimize water entry. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

REMOVAL

1. Remove the trim panel and watershield from the door. Refer to the 1993 Mark VIII Service Manual, Section 01-05, for the removal procedure.

2. Mark the location of the rear run lower retaining bolt. Remove the bolt.

3. Remove actuator.

NOTE:
THE INSIDE HANDLE, CABLE, LATCH ASSEMBLY, POWER ACTUATOR ROD, LOCK CYLINDER ROD AND LOCK/UNLOCK ROD MUST BE REMOVED AS A UNIT.

4. Disconnect the outside door handle rod by opening the yellow clip and disconnecting the threaded rod from the clip. The lock cylinder rod and lock/unlock rod cannot be removed with the latch in the installed position.

5. Remove the lock cylinder rod from the lock cylinder lever.

6. Remove the remote control.

NOTE:
USE CARE NOT TO DAMAGE THE ANTI-THEFT SHIELD.

7. Remove the latch assembly retaining screws.

a. Disconnect the door ajar and illuminated entry indicator wires, if so equipped.

b. Remove the latch from the door.

8. Remove the anti-theft shield from the latch by depressing the retaining clip from inside the latch using needlenose pliers.

9. Remove the remote link, latch-to-lock cylinder rods, and door indicator switches from the latch, where applicable.





10. Remove the door ajar switch by prying up on the lock tab, then rotate the switch 90~ and pull out. See Figure 1.

11. Replace the existing door ajar switch with new door ajar switch (F3LY-14018-B) by pushing in and rotating 90~ to lock.

INSTALLATION

1. Position the door ajar and illuminated entry indicator switches to the latch.

a. Install retaining screw.

b. Adjust switches.

2. Install new rod retaining clips and grommets in new latch assembly, using the removed latch as a guide.

3. Install the anti-theft shield.

4. Install remote cable, latch-to-lock cylinder rod, lock/unlock rod and power actuator.

5. Position the latch in the door.

a. Connect the wire to the door ajar and illuminated entry indicator switches.

b. Install the latch retaining screws.

c. Tighten the screws to 7-10 lb.ft. (10-14 N-m).

6. Install the door latch remote control.

7. Connect the latch-to-lock cylinder rod to the lock cylinder lever and outside door handle.

8. Check the latch operation.

9. Install the rear run lower retaining bolt, if removed.

a. Locate the bolt in the original position.

b. Tighten the bolt to 70-132 lb.in. (8-15 N-m).

10. Install the watershield and trim panel on the door. Refer to the 1993 Mark VIII Service Manual, Section 01-05, for the installation procedures.
