THIS MODIFICATION IS AUTHORIZED ONLY FOR THE LISTED ENGINE. PERFORMING THIS MODIFICATION ON OTHER ENGINE CALIBRATIONS IS UNAUTHORIZED AND COULD CREATE LIABILITY UNDER APPLICABLE FEDERAL OR LOCAL LAWS.

ISSUE:
A "rattle" noise from the engine compartment may be heard when driving in the 3000-5000 RPM range. The noise is most noticeable when the vehicle is driven in second gear, under moderate part throttle, "crowd/accelerating" drive mode. This condition is caused by the EEC IV Powertrain Control Module calibration.

ACTION:
Replace the PCM with a revised PCM after verifying concern. Refer to the following service procedure.

1. Road test the vehicle to verify "rattle" noise coming from the engine compartment during second gear "crowd/accelerating" drive mode in the 3000-5000 RPM range. If the noise is present, proceed to Step 2.

2. Remove ignition system spout connector and road test vehicle. If the noise is eliminated, reinstall the spout connector and proceed to Step 3.

3. Remove the existing PCM and replace it with revised PCM. Refer to the Parts Block in this article for correct parts usage.





Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
