Removal and Replacement
REMOVAL1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then raise and support vehicle.
2. Mark driveshaft and rear axle housing.
3. Remove driveshaft and rear axle housing, then remove four bolts retaining driveshaft assembly to rear axle.
4. Remove catalytic converter inlet pipe, then lower muffler, resonator, and tailpipe assembly.
5. Loosen retaining bolts to rear axle housing, then lower housing enough for driveshaft clearance.
6. Slide driveshaft out of transmission and position over rear axle housing.
7. Disconnect transmission shift selector mounting bracket.
8. Disconnect wiring harness electrical connector mounted on crossmember.
9. Remove transmission oil inlet tube.
10. Remove starter motor.
11. Position drain pan under transmission, then drain fluid and converter.
12. Position transmission assembly on suitable jack.
13. Remove crossmember assembly.
14. Remove four converter-to-flywheel retaining nuts, then lower transmission slightly and remove two top housing bolts.
15. Using a suitable jack, raise transmission and remove remaining transmission housing bolts.
16. Loosen EGR tube retaining nut on LH converter and position aside.
17. Remove transmission from vehicle.
18. Remove transmission pad from LH side of converter using a hacksaw.
INSTALLATION
1. Reverse procedure to install, tighten bolts.
