Valve Clearance: Adjustments

This engine is equipped with hydraulic valve lifters. No periodic adjustment is necessary.

The following procedure relates to the measurement of valve clearance check during engine assembly.

Fig. 5 Crankshaft To Valve Position At TDC:

1. Position No.1 piston on Top Dead Center (TDC), at the end of the compression stroke.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove valve cover.
4. Check clearance on the valves in the order shown in the image.
5. Loosen rocker arm shaft assembly retaining bolts to allow removal of push rods.
6. Compress valve spring and remove push rods. Ensure piston in related cylinder is below TDC to avoid damage to piston or valve.

Fig. 6 Valve Clearance Measurement:

7. Using a tappet bleed down wrench, or equivalent, apply pressure to valve rocker arm, then collapse lifter.
8. Measure valve clearance, follow crankshaft rotation procedure.
9. Replace valve lifter if valve clearance is not within specifications.
