Safing Sensor: Service Precautions

WARNING: Always wear safety glasses when servicing an air bag vehicle and when handling an air bag module.

LIVE AIR BAGS

WARNING:
- Carry a live air bag module with the bag and trim cover pointed away from your body. An accidental deployment will then deploy with a minimal chance of injury.

- Place a live air bag module on a bench or other surface with the trim cover up, away from the surface. This will reduce the motion of the air bag module if it is accidentally deployed.

DEPLOYED AIR BAGS

WARNING:
- Safety precautions must also be observed when handling a deployed air bag module.

- Wear gloves and safety glasses when handling a deployed air bag module.

- Wash your hands with mild soap and water after handling a deployed air bag module.

- The air bag module surface may contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

WARNING: Service is made by replacement only. do not attempt repair of the following:
- Air Bag Crash Sensor
- Air Bag Sliding Contact
- Air Bag Diagnostic Monitor
- Air Bag Modules

WARNING: Air bag modules with discolored or damaged cover deployment doors must be replaced, not repainted.

If a part is replaced and the new part does not correct the condition, install the original part and perform the diagnostic procedure again.

- Never probe the connectors on the air bag modules. Doing so may result in air bag module deployment which could result in personal injury.

WARNING:
- The electrical circuit necessary for system deployment is powered directly from the battery and backup power supply. To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the battery positive cable must be disconnected for one minute to de-energize the backup power supply prior to servicing or replacing any system components.

- The instruction "Disconnect" always refers to a connector. Never detach a component from the vehicle when instructed to "Disconnect". Vehicle sensor orientation is critical for proper system operation.

- Vehicle sensor orientation is critical for proper system operation. If a vehicle equipped with an air bag system is involved in a crash where the vehicle has been damaged in the area of the sensor, inspect the sensor mounting brackets for deformation. If damaged, the sensor should be replaced whether or not the air bag is deployed. In addition, ensure that body structure in the area of sensor mounting is restored to its original condition.

WARNING:
- The backup power supply energy must be depleted before any air bag component service is performed. To deplete backup power supply energy, disconnect the positive battery cable and wait one minute.

- The air bag simulator(s) must be removed and the air bag(s) reconnected before the system is reactivated.
