ANTI-THEFT - SELF-ACTIVATION - SERVICE TIP

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1995-1997 CONTINENTAL
1997-1998 MARK VIII

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to update the Diagnostic Procedure.

ISSUE
The anti-theft system may self-activate on some vehicles with no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) stored. This may be caused by multiple concerns.

ACTION
Refer to the following Diagnostic Procedure to aid in diagnosing self-activation of the anti-theft system.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

1. Do not perform On Demand Self Test when beginning service of the vehicle. This will erase the VIEW ALARM EVENT DATA.

2. Connect the New Generation Star (NGS) Tester to the On-Board Diagnostic (OBDII) connector using the SERVICE FUNCTION card (programmed to 5.0 level or greater).

3. Turn ignition to "RUN."

4. Select SERVICE BAY FUNCTIONS from the main menu and press TRIGGER.

5. HELP screen may appear. Press TRIGGER to bypass.

6. For 1995-1997 Continental, select LCM and press TRIGGER. For 1997-1998 Mark VIII, select SCIL and press TRIGGER.

7. Select VIEW ALARM EVENT DATA and press TRIGGER.

8. NGS screen will display as shown.

NOTE
YES IS DISPLAYED FOR THE CIRCUIT TRIGGERING AN ALARM EVENT SINCE THE LAST MEMORY CLEAR.

NOTE
"PASSENGER DOOR" WITH YES DISPLAYED INDICATES THAT A SWITCH OR CIRCUIT TO EITHER THE RIGHT FRONT, RIGHT REAR, OR LEFT REAR DOOR WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR AN ALARM EVENT.

NOTE
MULTIPLE YES DISPLAYS DO NOT INDICATE THAT EACH INPUT OCCURRED SIMULTANEOUSLY TO TRIGGER THE ANTI-THEFT WARNING. IT DOES INDICATE THAT THE CIRCUIT WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR AN ALARM EVENT AT SOME POINT IN TIME SINCE THE LAST MEMORY CLEAR.

9. Check the appropriate circuits and switches for opens/shorts and repair or replace as needed.

10. Press CANCEL twice.

11. Erase the VIEW ALARM EVENT DATA by installing the NGS Diagnostic Card to perform On Demand Self Test. For Continental enter the diagnostic test modes for the Lighting Control Module (LCM), perform On Demand Self Test. For Mark VIII enter the diagnostic test modes for the Steering Column Ignition Lighting (SCIL) module, perform On Demand Self Test.
