Disassembly and Assembly
DISASSEMBLY
CAUTION: Before disassembly begins, mark the valve position on the face of each valve being removed. The valves must be re-installed into the same positions.
NOTE: Camshafts must be at base circle before compressing valve spring (6513). Rotate camshafts as required until all rocker arms (6564) are removed.
1. Anchor cylinder head (6049) to a flat surface for valve spring removal. Protect head face surface to avoid scratches and dents on cylinder head face sealing surfaces.
2. Install Valve Spring Compressor T91P-6565-A under exhaust camshaft and on top of exhaust valve spring retainer (6514).
3. Install Valve Spring Compressor T93P-6565-A under intake camshaft and on top of primary or secondary intake valve spring retainer.
4. Compress valve spring far enough to remove rocker arm, if installed. Further compress valve spring and remove valve spring retainer keys (6518).
5. Remove tool and remove valve spring retainer and valve spring. Repeat Steps 1 through 5 until all valve springs are removed.
6. Remove valve tappet (6500).
7. Lift cylinder head carefully and remove intake valves (6507) and exhaust valves (6505).
8. Remove valve stem seals (6571) using locking pliers.
9. Remove 13 bolts retaining exhaust camshaft cap cluster assemblies to cylinder head to remove exhaust camshaft (6250).
10. Remove 12 bolts retaining intake camshaft cap cluster assemblies to cylinder head to remove intake camshaft.
11. Lightly tap upward on camshaft caps to be removed at position shown.
12. Remove camshafts straight upward to avoid bearing damage.
ASSEMBLY
1. Install valve tappet.
2. Apply clean engine oil meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-F to journals and lobes of camshafts. Position camshafts on cylinder head.
3. Install and seat camshaft cap cluster assemblies. Hand-start:
- twelve 52 mm bolts into intake camshaft caps.
- seven 52 mm bolts into inboard side of exhaust camshaft caps.
- six 42 mm bolts into outboard side of exhaust camshaft caps.
4. Tighten camshaft cap cluster retaining bolts in sequence shown to 8-12 Nm (71-106 inch lbs.).
5. Loosen 25 camshaft cap cluster retaining bolts approximately two turns or until head of bolt is free.
6. Retighten all bolts in sequence to 8-12 Nm (71-106 inch lbs.).
NOTE: A knotted rag or similar item must be positioned under valve to hold it in the up (closed) position.
7. Install all exhaust valves and intake valves removed from cylinder head.
8. Install new valve stem seals using Valve Stem Seal Replacer T91P-6571-A.
9. Position valve spring and valve spring retainer.
10. Install Valve Spring Compressor T91P-6565-A under exhaust camshaft and on top of exhaust valve spring retainer when needed.
11. Install Valve Spring Compressor T93P-6565-A under intake camshaft and on top of primary intake valve spring retainer when needed.
12. Install Valve Spring Compressor T93P-6565-A under intake camshaft and on top of secondary intake valve spring retainer when needed.
13. Compress valve spring far enough to install valve spring retainer keys.
14. Repeat Steps 6 through 13 until all exhaust valves and intake valves are installed.
CAUTION: Do not install rocker arms until cylinder head is installed on engine. Valve damage may occur if rocker arms are installed.
15. Check camshaft end play on all re-installed camshafts.
