Subject:
Safety Recall 95S33 - Certain 1995/1996 Lincoln Continentals - Lighting Control Module Replacement
Affected Vehicles
Certain 1995 and 1996 Model Year Lincoln Continentals built from 11/28/94 through 11/4/95 at the Wixom Assembly Plant.
Reasons For Recall
On some of these vehicles, a defect within the Autolamp system may cause the exterior lighting, including the headlamps, to shut off without warning. This would only occur while the Autolamp feature is being used to activate the lamps. It will not occur if the exterior lamps are being operated from the manual headlamp switch. If the headlamps shut off because of Autolamp malfunction, the driver can turn them back on by simply manually rotating the headlamp switch to the "ON" position (the second position as shown in the vehicle Owner Guide: page 107 in 1995; page 82 in 1996).
Vehicle Owner Guide: page 107 in 1995; page 82 in 1996
To correct this condition, it will be necessary to replace the lighting control module.
Owner Warning Letter
A warning letter was sent on 12/27/95 to owners of affected vehicles requesting them to discontinue use of the Autolamp feature and to operate their vehicle's exterior lighting manually by using the rotary headlamp switch to turn it on and off. A copy of the December warning letter is included with the attached Owner Letter which advises owners of parts availability. Owners of vehicles identified in our records as sold as of 12/15/95 were sent the December warning letter.
Vehicle Delivery Restrictions
Until repairs can be completed, the following delivery restrictions apply:
1. Do not deliver any of the affected vehicles prior to installation of a new lighting control module unless a copy of the December warning letter (copy attached) is given to the vehicle owner prior to vehicle delivery.
2. Also, before delivering any of the affected vehicles prior to installation of a new lighting control module, disable the Autolamp "ON" setting from the Memory Profile System (MPS) for both Driver # 1 and Driver # 2 profiles. See the Technical Instructions below and the Continental Memory Profile System Operator's Guide in the vehicle glove compartment for details.
Other Issues
This repair will also correct two other non-safety related concerns which may also occur on the affected vehicles. These concerns are inadvertent trunk opening and random horn chirping.
