This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Ford Motor Company has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1995 and 1996 Lincoln Continentals.

Safety Defect
On some of these vehicles, a defect within the Autolamp system may cause the exterior lighting, including the headlamps, to shut off without warning. If the headlamps were to go off while the car is being driven at night, an accident might result. This condition will only occur while the Autolamp feature is being used to activate the headlamps. It will not occur if the exterior lamps are activated by the manual headlamp switch. Accordingly, if the headlamps were to shut off without warning while in the Autolamp mode, the driver could regain headlamp function by simply manually rotating the headlamp switch to the second position as shown in the attached copy from your vehicle Owner Guide (page 109 in 1995; page 82 in 1996).

Vehicle Owner Guide: page 107 in 1995; page 82 in 1996

Repairs
To correct this condition, it will be necessary to install a new lighting control module in your vehicle. However, this part is not expected to be available from Ford to your dealer until mid-March. At that time you will be notified by first class mail, with a letter similar to this one, to have the new module installed by your dealer.

In the Meantime
Until a corrected lighting control module can be installed in your vehicle, we ask that you discontinue use of the Autolamp feature on your vehicle by holding the Autolamp switch down until the Message Center reads "Autolamp Off". Instead of using Autolamp, we ask that you operate the exterior lights manually by using the rotary headlamp switch to turn them on and off. See the attached Owner Guide page for location of the Autolamp switch and the rotary headlamp switch.

Also, until a corrected lighting control module can be installed in your vehicle, do not use the Memory Profile System to turn the Autolamp feature on. If you have already set Memory Profile to turn Autolamp on, please turn the memory recall switch on the back of each keyless entry transmitter off or, alternatively, reprogram (or have your dealer reprogram) each memory profile so Autolamp is off for both driver settings.
