Replacement
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring from the Powertrain control module (PCM) and position the engine control sensor wiring out of the way.
2. Directly above engine control sensor wiring, remove ground straps from dash panel.
3. Support front sub-frame using Rotunda Powertrain Lift 014-00765 and Universal Powertrain Removal Bracket 014-00766 or equivalents. Remove primary steering column boot attachments.
4. Remove intermediate shaft retaining bolts and remove steering column intermediate shaft coupling.
5. Remove secondary steering column opening weather seal from inside of passenger compartment.
6. Raise vehicle on a twin post hoist and remove front wheel and tire assemblies.
7. Remove front wheel spindle connecting rod cotter pins and nuts and remove tie rod ends from front wheel knuckle.
8. Remove tie rod ends from shaft. Mark position of jam nut to maintain alignment.
9. Remove nuts from steering gear-to-sub-frame retaining bolts.
10. Remove both air suspension height sensor attachments.
11. Remove rear sub-frame-to-body retaining bolts.
12. Remove dual converter Y pipe.
13. Lower Rotunda Powertrain Lift 014-00765, or equivalent carefully until front sub-frame separates from body approximately 100 mm (4 inches).
14. Remove two pins retaining heat shield to bracket and fold shield down.
15. Remove LH stabilizer bar link.
16. Disconnect electrical connectors from power steering auxiliary actuator and power steering pressure switch (PSP).
17. Rotate power rack and pinion steering gear to clear bolts from front sub-frame and pull left to facilitate line fitting removal.
18. Place a drain pan under vehicle and remove pressure line fitting from power steering auxiliary actuator and return line from power rack and pinion steering gear.
19. Remove power steering lines from steering gear heat shield bracket.
20. Remove heat shield from power steering heat shield bracket.
21. Remove power rack and pinion steering gear assembly through LH wheel well.
INSTALLATION
1. Install new Teflon(r) O-rings on line fittings.
2. Place steering gear retaining bolts in steering gear housing.
3. Install power rack and pinion steering gear through LH wheel well.
4. Install power steering line fittings to power rack and pinion steering gear and power steering auxiliary actuator assembly. Tighten fittings to 33-41 Nm (25-30 ft. lbs.).
5. Install electrical connectors to power steering auxiliary actuator and power steering pressure switch.
6. Position power rack and pinion steering gear into front sub-frame.
7. Install tie rod ends onto front wheel spindle tie rod.
8. Install heat shield to heat shield bracket with push pins.
9. Attach tie rod ends to front wheel knuckle. Install nuts and tighten to 47-63 Nm (35-46 ft. lbs.) and then continue tightening enough to align hole in tie rod end with next cotter pin slot in nut. Install new cotter pins.
10. Attach stabilizer bar links.
11. Raise Rotunda Powertrain Lift 014-00765 until front sub-frame contacts body.
12. Install sub-frame retaining bolts. Tighten to 135-195 Nm (100-143 ft. lbs.).
13. Install power rack and pinion steering gear-to-sub-frame nuts and tighten to 135-195 Nm (100-144 ft. lbs.).
14. Attach exhaust system flex tube to dual converter Y pipe.
15. Attach air suspension height sensor.
16. Install tire and wheel assemblies. Tighten lug nuts to 115-142 Nm (85-104 ft. lbs.) in an alternate pattern.
17. Remove jackstands and lower vehicle.
18. Fill power steering system with Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent. Use Start-Up Procedure After Power Steering Pump or Gear Service.
19. Install secondary steering column opening weather seal Onto power rack and pinion steering gear.
20. Attach steering column intermediate shaft coupling to power rack and pinion steering gear. Tighten bolt to 41-51 Nm (31-39 ft. lbs.).
21. Install primary steering column opening weather seal.
