NOTE: Refer to the Exploded View Of AX4N Automatic Transaxle while performing disassembly procedures.

1. Install torque converter handles, tool No. T81P-7902-C, or equivalent.
2. Remove torque converter from transaxle and drain fluid.
3. Mount transaxle in bench mounted holding fixture tool No. T57L-500-l3, or equivalent.
4. Using screwdriver, remove transaxle identification tag.
5. Place drain pan under transaxle, then turn transaxle in vertical position and drain fluid.

Overdrive Servo Removal:






6. Remove three overdrive servo cover bolts, cover, piston assembly, and spring.

NOTE: The overdrive band servo spring cover is under spring tension. Ensure parts are not ejected from case during removal.

7. Remove transaxle filer tube retaining bolt and pull fluid filler tube from case. Remove and discard tube to case grommet

Transaxle Range (TR) Sensor:






8. Remove Transaxle Range (TR) sensor retaining bolls and the sensor.

Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) Sensor Removal:






9. Remove Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor.

Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Removal:






10. Remove Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
11. Install front cover seal remover tool No. T74P-6700-A or equivalent, and 5 1/2 inch forcing screw into LH differential seal.
12. Screw front cover seal remover tool No. T74P-6700-A or equivalent, and forcing screw into outer shaft seal outer metal protector using one inch box wrench.
13. Tighten forcing screw on end of tool using 3/4 inch box wrench until outer metal protector is removed. Remove outer metal protector from tool and discard.
14. Install front cover seal remover and forcing screw into seal using one inch box wrench.
15. Tighten screw on end of tool until seal is removed. Discard seal.
16. Install step plate adapter tool No. D80L-630-A or equivalent, into output shaft opening. Install front cover seal and forcing screw into output shaft opening
17. Screw front cover seal remover and forcing screw into outer metal protector, then tighten screw on end of tool until outer metal protector is removed.
18. Remove outer metal protector from tool and discard, then install tool into seal.
19. Tighten screw on end of tool until seal is removed. Remove seal from tool and discard.
20. Remove and discard converter impeller hub seal using converter seal remover tool No. T94P-77001-EH and impact slide hammer, tool No. T80T-100-A or equivalent.

Chain Cover Bolt Removal From Bellhousing:






21. Remove five Torx and two chain cover bolts from inside transaxle bellhousing.
22. Rotate transaxle to vertical position.
23. Remove fifteen main control cover bolts, then the cover and gasket.
24. Disconnect electrical connectors from Transaxle Oil Temperature (TOT) sensor and five solenoids.
25. Using suitable wrench on flats of manual control lever shaft, rotate shaft clockwise to manual low detent.
26. Remove main control valve body.
27. Disconnect manual control valve detent lever.
28. Pull pump shaft from case.

Chain Cover Bolt And Shift Cable Stud Rmoval:






29. Remove 18 chain cover bolts and one shift cable stud. Note length and location of bolts. Start at inside and workout.
30. Remove chain cover and gasket
31. Remove four accumulator springs.

NOTE: Tag springs for assembly reference.

32. Simultaneously, lift out both drive sprocket and driven sprocket with drive chain.
33. Remove No. 2 thrust washer from drive sprocket support and No.4 thrust washer from driven sprocket support.
34. Remove and discard three roll pins from manual control lever shaft using locking pliers.
35. Slide manual control lever shaft out of case.
36. Remove parking lever actuating rod.
37. Pry manual control lever shaft seal out of case and discard.
38. Remove transaxle pan bolts, pan, and gasket.
39. Remove magnet from transaxle pan.
40. Remove and discard fluid filter assembly.
41. Remove four Torx tube bracket bolts and three tube support brackets.
42. Remove all four fluid tubes using lube tube remover tool No. T94P-77001-CH and impact slide hammer tool No. T59L-100-B, or equivalents.
43. Remove two park pawl actuating rod abutment bolts, then the actuating rod abutment.
44. Loosen reverse clutch anchor pin nut and remove Allen head bolt.
45. Use suitable socket to remove neutral drive accumulator cover.
46. Remove neutral/drive accumulator piston, shaft assembly, and springs.
47. Mount servo piston remover/replacer tool No. T92P-70023-A or equivalent, using a 9/16 inch wrench and two transaxle pan bolts.
48. Remove coast band servo assembly cover snap ring with a screwdriver.
49. Remove coast band servo cover, piston/rod assembly, and spring.
50. Remove driven sprocket support.
51. Remove No.5 selective thrust washer.

NOTE: Thrust washer and driven sprocket bearing may remain on driven sprocket support when it is removed.

52. Using 0-ring tool No. T71P-19703-C or equivalent, remove No. 8 selective thrust washer and No. 9 needle bearing.
53. Remove plastic overdrive band retainer.
54. Remove overdrive band.
55. Rotate transaxle to vertical position. Using front clutch loading tool No. T86-70389-A or equivalent, install hook end of tool into one of the lube holes in front sun shell position notched block over edge of assembly and tighten handle.

CAUTION: Do not overtighten.

56. Lift clutch assembly out of case by lifting loading tool.
57. Install extended front clutch loading tool screw No. T94P-77001-HH or equivalent into handle of front clutch loading tool No T86P-7O389-A. Install tools to reverse clutch and planet assembly and lift from case.
58. Lift out low/intermediate drum, sun gear, and one-way clutch assembly.
59. Remove coast band.
60. Remove low/intermediate clutch retaining ring from case.
61. Remove low/intermediate clutch pack pressure plate friction plates, steels, and wave springs.
62. Remove beveled retaining ring.
63. Lift final drive/differential and rear planet support assembly from transaxle using output shaft.
64. Remove No. 18 differential carrier thrust washer and No. 19 differential carrier thrust bearing and race.
65. Remove final drive ring gear from case.
