DIST Hookup
DIST EI - HIGH DATA RATE HOOKUP1. Key OFF. All accessories should be OFF during testing.
2. Select proper Overlay and Program Cartridge to match ignition system to be tested.
3. Install overlay on front panel of tester.
4. Insert Program Cartridge into the cartridge slot (marked on the right hand side of the front panel). Make sure the module is fully inserted.
NOTE: The DIST may be damaged or cause driveability problems if the Program Cartridge is not inserted or improperly inserted.
5. Select and install the EI High Data Rate harness adapter to the DIST tester.
6. Verify that the tester switches, Crankshaft Position (CKP) SIMULATION and WIGGLE TEST, are in the OFF position.
7. Disconnect the vehicle wiring harnesses from Ignition Control Module (ICM):
a. Depress tab on connector clip to remove ignition harness.
b. Inspect connectors for dirt, corrosion, moisture, and bent or broken pins.
c. Clean or repair as required.
8. Hook tester to ICM:
a. Plug male connector of tester into engine harness connector.
b. Plug female connector of tester into ICM.
9. Key On Engine Off (KOEO). Press RESET button on tester. The tester will perform a Self-Test every time it is reset or powered up. During Self-Test, all LEDs will light and a beep will be heard.
a. If tester fails to perform Self-Test and VPWR LED is OFF, complete the following test sequence:
1. Key OFF.
2. Disconnect tester from vehicle.
3. Connect a jumper wire from VPWR jack to vehicle battery POS (+) terminal.
4. Connect a jumper wire from PWR GND jack to vehicle battery NEG (-) terminal.
5. If tester performs Self-Test, reconnect tester to vehicle harness and GO to Pinpoint Test Step G1. Pinpoint Test G, VPWR
6. If tester does not perform Self-Test, refer to tester warranty.
b. If any LEDs light or beep does not function during Self-Test, refer to tester warranty.
c. If tester passes Self-Test, continue with step 10.
NOTE: You must perform Quick Test and follow instructions in the Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/System Diagnosis/Testing and Inspection Procedures/Quick Test (Extracting and Clearing Codes) and EEC Pinpoint Test steps before starting. Testing and Inspection
10. Attempt to recreate fault:
a. Turn KEY ON, ENGINE OFF.
b. If ANY LEDS turn ON, GO to the appropriate Pinpoint Test as shown in the Diagnostics By Service Code And Symptom chart. Diagnostics By Service Code and Symptom
c. If NO LEDS turn ON, then crank (for 5 to 10 seconds) or start engine and recreate the drivability concern.
d. If ANY LEDS turn ON, GO to the appropriate Pinpoint Test as shown in the Diagnostics By Service Code And Symptom chart. Diagnostics By Service Code and Symptom
e. If NO LEDS turn ON, GO to bottom of the Diagnostics By Service Code And Symptom chart. Diagnostics By Service Code and Symptom
