Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview
1. Verify the customers concern by operating the luggage compartment door release/fuel door release to duplicate the concern.
2. Inspect to determine if one of the following mechanical or electrical concerns apply:
3. If the inspection reveals obvious concerns that can be readily identified, repair as required.
NOTE: Ford doesn't provide a procedure for extracting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes without a NGS tester.
4. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the Rotunda New Generation Star (NGS) Tester to the data link connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the NGS menu. If the NGS does not communicate with the vehicle:
a. check that the program card is properly installed.
b. check the connections to the vehicle.
c. check the ignition switch position.
If the NGS still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the New Generation Star Tester manual.
5. Perform the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST using the NGS. If the NGS responds with:
a. CKT 914 and CKT 915 = ALL MODULES NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIPPED, go to Communication System Diagnostics to diagnose the network concern.
b. NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIPPED for driver door module (DDM), go to Pinpoint Test A.
c. NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIPPED for steering column/ignition/lighting control module (SCIL), go to Pinpoint Test B.
d. SYSTEM PASSED for the DDM, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs, then execute Self Test Diagnostics for the DDM.
e. SYSTEM PASSED for the SCIL, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs, then execute Self Test Diagnostics for the SCIL.
6. If the DDM DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Driver Door Module (DDM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics. If the SCIL DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Steering Column/Ignition/Lighting Control Module (SCIL) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics.
7. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, go to the Symptom Chart to continue diagnostics.
