Removal and Installation

CAUTION: At no time, when the timing chains are removed and the cylinder heads are installed, may the crankshaft and/or camshaft be rotated. Rotation may result in valve and/or piston damage.

1. Remove valve covers from engine.
2. Remove front engine cover.
3. Remove rocker arms.





4. Remove High Data Rate (HDR) wheel, then rotate engine to No. 1 TDC.





5. Install Cam Positioning tool T91P-6256-A or equivalent on camshaft flats.
6. Remove righthand tensioner attaching bolts, then remove tensioner and arm.
7. Remove righthand chain guide attaching bolts, then remove chain guide.
8. Remove righthand timing chain, then remove righthand crankshaft gear.
9. Remove righthand camshaft gear attaching bolt, washer, gear and spacer, if required.
10. Remove lefthand tensioner attaching bolts, then remove tensioner and arm.
11. Remove lefthand chain guide attaching bolts, then remove chain guide.
12. Remove lefthand timing chain, then remove lefthand crankshaft gear.
13. Remove lefthand camshaft gear attaching bolt, washer, gear and spacer, if required.
14. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. If engine has jumped time, ensure all repairs to engine components and/or valve train are completed. Then rotate engine counterclockwise 45°. This will position all pistons below top of deck face.
b. Torque camshaft and washer attaching bolt to 81-95 ft lb.
c. Bleed timing chain tensioner.
d. Torque timing chain tensioner attaching bolts to 15-22 ft lb.
e. Torque timing chain guide attaching bolts to 6-8.8 ft lb.
