AIRBAG MODULE INSPECTION

AFFECTED VEHICLES:
CERTAIN 1994-1997 MODEL YEAR MUSTANG AND
CERTAIN 1995-1997 MODEL YEAR TOWN CAR

OVERVIEW

This document outlines the procedure for inspecting the 4th, 5th and 6th characters of the inflator serial number stamped on the inflator which is located on the back of the driver's airbag module. If the characters match those listed, the airbag module must be replaced.

WARNING!
TO AVOID POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY IN THE CASE OF ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT, DO NOT PLACE THE AIRBAG MODULE ON ANY SURFACE WITH THE TRIM COVER FACING DOWN.

WARNING!
DO NOT DEPLOY THE SUSPECT AIRBAG MODULE. PACKAGE THE SUSPECT AIRBAG MODULE IN THE REPLACEMENT AIRBAG SHIPPING BOX AND USE THE RETURN TAG TO SHIP IT TO THE SUPPLIER. CALL THE SPECIAL SERVICE SUPPORT CENTER AT 1-800-325-5621 FOR INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE REPLACING THE SUSPECT AIRBAG.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Remove the driver's airbag module. Refer to the service procedure in Section 01-20B of the appropriate Workshop Manual for the vehicle on which you are performing this service procedure.

2. WARNING: TO AVOID POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY IN THE CASE OF ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT, DO NOT PLACE THE AIRBAG MODULE ON ANY SURFACE WITH THE TRIM COVER FACING DOWN.





NOTE:
The inflator serial number contains 11 characters, both alpha and numeric. It can be found stamped on the inflator, located on the back of the driver's airbag, and also on a sticker just below the stamping. See Figure 1. Example: FBBL2JG1ABE.





Compare the 4th, 5th and 6th characters of the inflator serial number to the list shown.

3. WARNING: DO NOT DEPLOY THE SUSPECT AIRBAG MODULE. PACKAGE THE SUSPECT AIRBAG MODULE IN THE REPLACEMENT AIRBAG SHIPPING BOX AND USE THE RETURN TAG TO SHIP IT TO THE SUPPLIER. CALL THE SPECIAL SERVICE SUPPORT CENTER AT 1-800-325-5621 FOR INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE REPLACING THE SUSPECT AIRBAG.

^ If the 4th, 5th, and 6th characters of the inflator serial number match one of the codes listed above, the airbag must be replaced.

^ If the 4th, 5th, and 6th characters of the inflator serial number do not match one of the codes listed above, the airbag does not need to be replaced.

4. Install the airbag into the vehicle~ Refer to the service procedure in Section 01-20B of the appropriate Workshop Manual for the vehicle on which you are performing the service procedure.
