This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include a statement which will include all prior calibrations to the ones listed.

CALIBRATION:
The calibrations listed are current calibrations. Past calibrations for the listed vehicles are also included.

6-18B-R10, 6-18E-R10, 6-18F-R11, 6-18H-R11, 6-18I-R11, 6-18J-R10, 6-18M-R11, 6-18N-R11, 6-18P-R10, 6-18Q-R10, 6-18S-R10, 6-19A-R10, 6-19C-R10, 6-19P-R10, 6-19T-R10, 6-20A-R10, 6-20C-R10, 6-20P-R10, 6-20T-R10

WARNING:
THIS MODIFICATION IS AUTHORIZED ONLY FOR THE LISTED ENGINE. PERFORMING THIS MODIFICATION ON OTHER ENGINE CALIBRATIONS IS UNAUTHORIZED AND COULD CREATE LIABILITY UNDER APPLICABLE FEDERAL OR LOCAL LAWS.

ISSUE:
The "Check Engine" Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate and Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307, P0308 may be stored in continuous memory. There may be no driveability concerns present. The misfire monitor is looking for concerns before the engine is warm and stabilized. This TSB article has been coded on OASIS to enable this service repair to be performed on all referenced calibrations.

ACTION:
Reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) using the Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) or New Generation Star (NGS) Tester or replace the PCM of all affected vehicles. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

NOTE:
REGIONAL APPROVAL MUST BE OBTAINED WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE PCM.

NOTE:
THE FOLLOWING CHARTS LIST ALL CURRENT CALIBRATION REVISIONS. PAST CALIBRATIONS FOR THE VEHICLES LISTED ON THIS CHART ARE ALSO INCLUDED. ALL VEHICLES WITH AFFECTED CALIBRATIONS SHOULD RECEIVE THE UPDATED SERVICE CALIBRATION.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. For all customer concerns except MIL On, conduct normal diagnostics and repair as required. Upon completion of repairs, proceed to Step 3. For MIL On concerns, proceed to Step 2.

2. Perform an EEC Diagnostic Quick Test to check for DTCs in memory:

For all DTCs present except the ones listed in the Title, complete normal diagnostics and repair as required, then go to Step 3. Refer to the appropriate model 1996 Powertrain/Drivetrain Service Manual and the 1996 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD II) Service Manual for detailed diagnostic and repair procedures.

For the DTCs listed in the Title, complete normal diagnostics and repair as required. If no repairs were indicated, proceed to Step 3. If repairs were required, first proceed to Step 3, then verify the concern was resolved after the PCM has been reprogrammed by rechecking DTCs after completing a test drive of the vehicle using the following drive cycle:

- Allow the vehicle to reach normal operating temperature.

- Accelerate moderately (1/2 to 3/4 throttle) to 97-105 km/h (60-65 mph).

- Cruise at 97-105 km/h (60-65 mph) for a minimum of 1 minute (must be on a level road or up a slight grade) using steady throttle pressure.

- Decelerate rapidly to 56-64 km/h (35-40 mph).

- Cruise at 56-64 km/h (35-40 mph) for 1 minute (must be on a level road) using steady throttle pressure.

- Repeat 4 times.

If any DTCs return, repair as required.

3. Check decal to verify vehicle does not have the latest calibration. If it does not, reprogram the PCM with the appropriate calibration per the Application Chart using the latest level calibration CD-ROM or later.

Obtain an Authorized Modification Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
