Power Steering Pressure Switch: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring from Powertrain control module (PCM) and position the engine control sensor wiring out of the way.
2. Directly above engine control sensor wiring, remove ground straps from dash panel.
3. Support engine and transaxle assembly using Rotunda Powertrain Lift 014-00765 and Universal Powertrain Removal Bracket 014-00766 or equivalents. Remove primary steering column boot attachments.
4. Remove steering column gear input shaft coupling retaining bolt and remove steering column intermediate shaft coupling.
5. Remove steering column opening weather seal from inside of passenger compartment.

6. Remove both air suspension height sensor attachments.
7. Remove rear sub-frame-to-body retaining bolts.

8. Remove dual converter Y pipe.
9. Lower Rotunda Powertrain Lift 014-00765 or equivalent carefully until front sub-frame separates from body approximately 100 mm (4 inches).
10. Remove two pins retaining heat shield to bracket and fold shield down.
11. Remove electrical connector from power steering pressure switch.
12. Remove two steering gear-to-crossmember retaining nuts. Remove power rack and pinion steering gear with retaining bolts from crossmember. Tilt power rack and pinion steering gear to gain access to the power steering pressure switch.
13. Remove power steering pressure switch by unscrewing from power steering auxiliary actuator.

INSTALLATION
1. Replace O-ring on power steering pressure switch. Install to power steering auxiliary actuator until tight.
2. Connect electrical connector to power steering pressure switch.
3. Rotate power rack and pinion steering gear with mounting bolts to crossmember. Install retaining nuts. Tighten to 113-153 Nm (84-112 ft lb).
4. Raise Rotunda Powertrain Lift 014-00765 or equivalent until front sub-frame contacts body.
5. Install sub-frame retaining bolts. Tighten to 135-195 Nm (100-143 ft lb).
6. Install two pins and heat shield to heat shield bracket.
7. Attach exhaust system flex tube to dual converter Y pipe.
8. Attach air suspension height sensor.
9. Install tire and wheel assemblies. Tighten lug nuts to 115-142 Nm (85-104 ft lbs) in an alternate pattern.
10. Lower vehicle.
11. Fill power steering system with Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent. Use Start-Up Procedure After Power Steering Pump or Gear Service.
12. Install secondary steering column opening weather seal onto power rack and pinion steering gear.
13. Attach steering column intermediate shaft coupling to power rack and pinion steering gear. Tighten bolt to 41-51 Nm (31-37 ft lbs).
14. Install primary steering column opening weather seal.
15. Attach steering column intermediate shaft coupling to steering column. Tighten nuts to 21-33 Nm (16-24 ft lbs). 16. Connect engine control sensor wiring to Powertrain control module.
17. Install screw retaining two ground straps to dash panel directly above engine control sensor wiring.
18. Purge power steering system of air.
19. Adjust toe setting.
