Passive Anti-Theft System Key Initialization

Special Tool: New Generation Star (NGS) Tester:

Special Tool(s)

METHOD 1

1. If a programmed key is available, enter NGS: PATS, ACTIVE COMMAND modes.

NOTE:
- Method 1 is used if all previously programmed keys have been lost or the customer wants the previously programmed keys erased.
- The passive anti-theft system allows programming of only one key before the vehicle will start if the ignition lock cylinder assembly is replaced.

2. Select the steering column/ignition/lighting control module active command Keycode Erase Time Set. Set minutes to 8.

NOTE: It will take eight minutes to erase the programmed codes.

3. Select the steering column/ignition/lighting control module function tests. Trigger ignition key code ERASE ON. The key codes will be erased in eight minutes.

NOTE: The steering column/ignition/lighting control module must remain in the diagnostic mode for the entire 8 minutes after the ERASE signal is sent or the key codes will be retained. Monitoring of the erasure can be done with the PID NUM KEYS of the programmed keys after eight minutes.

4. Place a new encoded key in ignition. Turn ignition switch to RUN.
5. For further keys, follow the spare key programming.

METHOD 2
1. Insert an unprogrammed key into the ignition switch and turn to RUN. The anti-theft indicator lamp will begin to flash. The anti-theft indicator lamp will continue to flash for 15 minutes. The ignition switch must remain in the RUN position for the 15 minutes. The anti-theft indicator lamp will then go out.

NOTE:
- Method 2 is used when a customer has misplaced a key. Method 2 is also for use when no service facility with diagnostic tools is available.
- To preserve the high level of protection gained by the anti-theft system, Method 2 programming takes approximately 45 minutes.
- The anti-theft system will abort initialization if the programming steps are not followed precisely. If the system aborts initialization, the process must be repeated.

2. Within five minutes, turn the ignition switch OFF for approximately one second.
3. Turn the ignition switch to RUN. The anti-theft indicator lamp will begin to flash. The lamp will continue to flash for 15 minutes. The ignition switch must remain in the RUN position for the 15 minutes. The anti-theft indicator lamp will then go out.
4. Within five minutes, turn the switch OFF for one second.
5. Turn the ignition switch to RUN. The anti-theft indicator lamp will begin to flash. The lamp will continue to flash for 15 minutes. The ignition switch must remain in RUN for these 15 minutes. The anti-theft indicator lamp will then go out.
6. Within five minutes, turn the ignition switch OFF for one second then back to run. The steering column/ignition/lighting control module will have erased the previous stored codes and the new encoded key will start the vehicle.
7. Program the additional keys.
