Parking Brake System: Description and Operation

DESCRIPTION - The parking brake system consists of the following features:
^ The system is cable-actuated and controlled by foot-operated parking brake control.
^ A parking brake warning indicator actuated by the parking brake control.
^ The parking brake mechanism is self-adjusting.

OPERATION
To apply parking brake, press parking brake control downward. An independent foot-operated parking brake control actuates the rear disc brake caliper. The parking brake can be released electrically or manually.

ELECTRIC RELEASE
The steering column/ignition/lighting control module controls the electrical release of the parking brake. With the engine running, the brake pedal pressed, and the transmission range selector lever shifted to reverse or a forward gear, the steering column/ignition/lighting control module supplies power to the parking brake release actuator, releasing the parking brake.

MANUAL RELEASE
To release the parking brake manually:
^ pull up on the manual parking brake release handle on the floor next to the driver seat.
^ The parking brake control will release with a click, signaling that the parking brake has disengaged.
^ After returning to the full "OFF" position, the parking brake control will reset itself to lock upon the next parking brake control pedal application.

BRAKE WARNING SYSTEM
A parking brake warning indicator is located in the instrument panel. It illuminates to signal the driver the parking brake is applied. If the indicator remains "ON", brake system service is required.
