Disassembly and Assembly
DISASSEMBLY
CAUTION: Do not place the cylinder head flat on the bench. The valves will bend. Before disassembly begins, mark the valve position on the face of each valve being removed. The valves must be re-installed into the same positions.
NOTE: LH is shown, RH is similar.
1. Remove the roller followers with camshaft on base circle.
(1) Install the Valve Spring Compressor on the valve spring.
(2) Compress the tool and remove the roller follower.
2. Repeat step 1 for the remaining roller followers.
3. Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters.
4. Remove the bolt and remove the camshaft sprocket.
5. Compress the tensioner and install a lock pin.
6. Remove the bolt and washer.
7. Remove the timing chain and the camshaft sprocket.
8. Remove the bolts.
9. Remove the bolts and remove the camshaft cap assemblies.
10. Remove the camshafts.
11. Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters.
CAUTION: Make sure the tool is seated properly on the valve spring. Apply a small amount of air at a time. This will prevent the tool from shifting and causing damage to the cylinder head.
12. Install the air-operated spring compressor on the cylinder head.
13. Compress the Valve Spring Compressor and remove the key from the valves.
14. Remove the intake valves (6507) and the valve springs.
1 Release the pressure and remove the Valve Spring Compressor.
2 Remove the intake valves and the valve springs from the cylinder head.
15. Remove the 16 valve stem seals.
ASSEMBLY
NOTE: LH is shown, RH is similar.
1. Apply clean engine oil meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-F to journals and lobes of camshaft. Position camshaft on cylinder head.
2. Install and seat camshaft cap cluster assemblies. Hand-start 12 (52 mm long) bolts into intake camshaft caps, 7 (52 mm long) bolts into inboard side of exhaust camshaft and 6 (42 mm long) bolts into outboard side of exhaust camshaft caps.
3. Tighten camshaft cap cluster retaining bolts in sequence to 8-12 Nm (71-106 inch lbs.).
NOTE: Each camshaft cap cluster is tightened individually.
4. Loosen 25 camshaft cap cluster retaining bolts approximately two turns or until head of bolt is free.
5. Retighten all bolts in sequence to 8-12 Nm (71-106 inch lbs.).
NOTE: Camshafts should turn freely with a slight drag.
6. Check camshaft end play on all reinstalled camshafts.
7. Follow remainder of the disassembly procedure in reverse order.
