Engine Running
VALVES AND CYLINDER HEADNOTE: Static checks (engine OFF) should be made on the engine prior to the dynamic procedure.
1. Remove the valve cover.
2. Start the engine and, while idling, check for proper operation of all parts. Carefully observe and inspect the following:
a. Check for proper valve train lubrication.
b. Check for plugged oil feed in the roller follower or the cylinder head.
c. Check for plugged oil drain back holes in roller followers or cylinder head (6049).
d. Check for plugged oil drain back holes.
INSUFFICIENT OILING
If insufficient oiling is suspected, accelerate the engine to 1200 rpm ±100 rpm with the transmission in NEUTRAL and the engine at normal operating temperature. Oil should spurt from the roller followers oil holes such that the valve tips and roller followers are well oiled and/or, with the valve covers (6582) off, oil splash may overshoot the roller followers. If oiling is insufficient for this to occur, check the oil passages for blockage.
