Water Pump: Service and Repair

Typical 4.6L Water Pump:






REMOVAL
1. Drain engine coolant.
2. Loosen four bolts retaining the water pump pulley (8509) to water pump (8501).
3. Release drive belt tensioner (6B209) and remove accessory drive belt (8620).
4. Remove four bolts retaining water pump pulley to water pump and remove water pump pulley.
5. Remove four bolts retaining water pump to engine and remove water pump.

INSTALLATION
1. Replace water pump O-ring seal and clean sealing surface of cylinder block (6010).
2. Lubricate O-ring seal with a rubber lubricant meeting Ford specification ESE-M99B176-A.
3. Position water pump onto engine and press into position until seated.
4. Install four retaining bolts. Tighten to 20-30 Nm (15-22 ft. lbs.).
5. Position water pump pulley on water pump and install four retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 20-30 Nm (15-22 ft. lbs.).
6. Install accessory drive belt.

CAUTION: Use extreme care to keep coolant mixture off of the accessory drive belt and pulleys. If needed, remove drive belt and rinse with clear water. Clean pulleys and install drive belt. Drive belt squeal and early drive belt fatigue will occur otherwise.

7. Fill engine coolant.
8. Check for leaks.
