Driveshaft Indexing

1. Turn the suspension service switch OFF.
2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
3. Place floor stands under the suspension arms to support the rear of the vehicle.
4. Note or mark the indexing of the driveshaft to the transmission.
5. Note or mark the indexing of the driveshaft to the rear axle universal joint flange.
6. Mark one hole position on the driveshaft centering socket yoke at the rear of the driveshaft with the letter A.
7. Starting with position A, mark the eight rear axle universal joint flange holes from 1 through 8.

NOTE: Position A-1 is considered the original index position.

8. Disconnect the driveshaft.
9. Check the universal joints for binding.
1 Manipulate the universal joints in each direction of rotation.
2 If a universal joint feels stiff, or has a lumpy, gritty feel in any direction, replace the universal joint.
10. Re-index the driveshaft 180 degrees at the axle position A-5.
11. Check for a vibration at road test speed.

NOTE: If the vehicle tests satisfactorily at any point during this procedure, do not proceed with any further steps.

12. If a vibration is still present, evaluate positions A-3 and A-7.
13. If further improvement is desired, evaluate the remaining positions that are located between the best of the two previous positions.
14. Install the driveshaft.
