Cleaning

CAUTION: If the cylinder block is not to be inspected or assembled within 2-4 hours, coat the cylinder and bearing bores with engine oil to prevent rust.

BLOCK CLEANING

The Cylinder Block - (6010) may be cleaned by immersing it in a cleaning vat, using a commercial cleaning solution. The cylinder block may also be cleaned with automotive parts cleaning solvents and brushes or by steam cleaning. Be sure to clean all oil passages and remove all gasket material, cements, and sealers from their surfaces.

Cylinder Bolt Holes - Make sure threads in the cylinder head bolt holes are clean. Dirt in the threads may cause binding and result in a false torque reading. It is advisable at this time to clean the cylinder head bolt holes in the cylinder block by turning a grease-coated tap fully into the holes. Then clean the holes again and oil them.

Bearings And Bearing Retainers - Thoroughly clean the grooves in the crankshaft bearings and bearing retainers.

Remove Old Gasket Material - from all machined surfaces. Blow out all passages, then bolt holes and other openings with compressed air.

Remove All Pipe Plugs - that seal oil passages and clean out all the passages. Replace all plugs that show evidence of leakage.

INSPECTION
^ Check all machined surfaces for burrs nicks scratches and scores. Remove minor imperfections with an oil stone.
^ Inspect the cylinder walls for scoring, roughness or other signs of wear.
^ Inspect the cylinder block for flatness of the head gasket surface (deck).

CYLINDER BORE CLEANING

NOTE: If poor or improper cleaning procedures of the cylinder bores and/or cylinder block (6010) are followed, rusting may occur. Clean cylinder bore after any service operation such as honing or deglazing.

1. Clean the bore(s) with soap or detergent and water.
2. Then, thoroughly rinse the bore(s) with clean water to remove the soap or detergent.
3. Wipe the bore(s) with a clean lint-free cloth.
4. Finally, wipe the bore(s) with a clean cloth dipped in engine oil.
