Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

1. Check the length of the steering gear input worm gear and rack to be sure it has not been partially collapsed by a previous impact.
2. Check for side play of the steering gear input worm gear and rack in the steering column bearings. Any detachable side play can adversely affect steering control. If in excess of 0.75 mm (0.03 inch), serious bearing wear is indicated, and the steering column tube assembly should be replaced.
