IDLE - ROUGH - EXHAUST SYSTEM RESONANCE

FORD:
1997-99 CROWN VICTORIA

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1997-99 GRAND MARQUIS, TOWN CAR

ISSUE
Engine roughness at idle may occur on some single exhaust vehicles. This is due to exhaust system resonance at idle.

ACTION
Install an exhaust system mass damper on the RH "Y" pipe. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTE
THIS DAMPER IS FOR VEHICLES WITH SINGLE EXHAUST ONLY. VEHICLES WITH DUAL EXHAUST ALREADY HAVE THIS DAMPER INSTALLED ON THE RH "H" PIPE.

1. Raise vehicle on hoist.

2. Remove the two (2) bolts and flag nuts which secure the RH catalytic converter to the "Y" pipe. Discard the bolts and flag nuts.

3. Remove the gasket between the catalyst flange and the "Y" pipe flange. Discard the gasket and verify that the two (2) flanges are free of any gasket materials. Clean as required.

4. Insert a new Gasket (E9AZ-5E241-A) between the flanges.

5. Install the Mass Damper (F2VY-5F240-A) with the mass toward the RH side of the vehicle and with the damper bracket on the "Y" pipe flange using new Bolts (56143-S100) and Nuts (391188-S100).

6. Tighten the bolts to 35-45 N.m (26-33 lb-ft).

7. Start engine and verify that there are no exhaust leaks.

8. Lower the vehicle.
