Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

1. Verify the customer concern by operating the instrument cluster to duplicate the condition by observing the indicators and gauges to determine if they are operating properly with the ignition switch:
- in RUN with the engine off.
- in START before the ignition switch is released.
- in RUN with the engine running.
2. Inspect to determine if any of the following mechanical or electrical concerns apply.

VISUAL INSPECTION CHART

Mechanical
- Engine coolant level
- Accessory drive belt
- Engine oil level
- Brake fluid level

Electrical
- Blown fuse
- Circuit wiring
- Switches or sensors

3. If the inspection reveals obvious concern(s) that can be readily identified, repair as required.

4. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect New Generation Star (NGS) Tester to the Data Link Connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel to perform DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST. If NGS Tester responds with NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIPPED for the Hybrid Electronic instrument Cluster (HEC), go to Pinpoint Test A. A: No Communication With the HEC

If NGS Tester responds with NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIPPED for the Steering Column/Ignition/Lighting control (SCIL) module, go to Pinpoint Test B. B: No Communication W/Steering Column/Ign/Lighting Module

If the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST is passed for the HEC and the SCIL module, retrieve continuous Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and execute self-test diagnostics for the HEC and the SCIL module.

5. If the self-test is passed and no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are retrieved, go to the Symptom Chart to continue diagnostics.Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures

6. If DTCs are retrieved for the hybrid electronic instrument cluster, go to the HEC Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics. Hybrid Electronic Cluster (HEC) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index

If DTCs are retrieved for the steering column/ignition/lighting control module, go to the SCIL Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics. Steering Column/Ign/Lighting (SCIL) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index

7. If the HEC cannot be accessed by NGS Tester, go to Pinpoint Test A. A: No Communication With the HEC

If the SCIL module cannot be accessed by NGS Tester, go to Pinpoint Test B. B: No Communication W/Steering Column/Ign/Lighting Module
