Headlamp System
- The low beam headlamps are High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting. The Steering Column/Ignition/Lighting (SCIL) module controls the power source to the individual headlamp ballast's depending on the position of the autolamp switch, the headlamp switch and the dimmer switch.- Power for both headlamp ballasts is constantly supplied to the SCIL module through a 60 A maxi fuse in the power distribution box and harness and through fuse junction panel fuse 19 (10 A) for the LH ballast and fuse 25 (10 A) for the RH ballast.
- The SCIL module will supply power to the LH and RH headlamp ballasts if the headlamp switch is in the low beam position and the headlamp switch is turned on or the autolamp system is operating.
- The SCIL module also monitors the windshield wiper operation. When the windshield wipers are turned to low or high speed, the SCIL module will turn on the low beam headlamps. If the windshield wipers are turned off, the headlamps will be turned off unless the autolamps are operating. The SCIL module uses a timing feature to detect intermittent wiper mode and will not turn on the headlamps in this mode. This function can be disabled through the vehicle settings on the message center indicator module.
- The high beam headlamps are halogen bulbs. The high beam headlamps are powered by the high beam relay located in the power distribution box and harness. The high beam relay is activated by the SCIL module which grounds the high beam relay coil when the headlamp dimmer switch is pulled toward the steering wheel. The first dimmer switch detent is flash-to-pass position and will illuminate the high beams until released. The second dimmer switch detent position is the high beam position and will illuminate the high beams until the dimmer switch is pulled to this position again.
- The SCIL module also controls the battery saver feature. If the headlamps are left on, the battery saver feature will automatically turn the head lamps off if:
^ The ignition switch is turned to OFF.
^ The headlamp switch is in the HEAD position.
^ Ten minutes expire since the last input.
- The SCIL module battery saver function will also turn the interior demand lighting off after 30 minutes expire.
