Flow of Diagnosis
1. Verify the customer's concern by operating the starter system to duplicate the concern.WARNING
^ WHEN SERVICING STARTER MOTOR OR PERFORMING OTHER UNDERHOOD WORK IN THE AREA OF THE STARTER MOTOR, BE AWARE THAT THE HEAVY GAUGE BATTERY INPUT LEAD AT THE STARTER SOLENOID IS "ELECTRICALLY HOT" AT ALL TIMES. A PROTECTIVE CAP OR BOOT IS PROVIDED OVER THIS TERMINAL THAT MUST BE REPLACED AFTER SERVICING. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT BATTERY GROUND CABLE BEFORE SERVICING STARTER.
^ WHEN WORKING IN AREA OF THE STARTER MOTOR, BE CAREFUL TO AVOID TOUCHING HOT EXHAUST COMPONENTS.
2. Inspect to determine if any of the following mechanical or electrical concerns apply:
VISUAL INSPECTION CHART
Mechanical
^ Starter motor mounting misaligned
^ Flywheel ring gear tooth damage
Electrical
^ Connections loose, damaged or shorting
^ Damaged battery
^ Damaged Fuse
- Power Distribution Box Fuse 27 (30 A)
- Fuse Junction Panel Fuse 5 (10 A), Fuse 6 (1O A)
- Fuse 2 (15 A),Fuse 19 (1O A), Fuse 26 (15 A), Fuse 1 (10 A), Fuse 25 (10 A), Fuse 13 (15 A), Fuse 7 (15 A), Fuse 12 (15 A) and Fuse 31 (10 A)
3. If inspection reveals obvious concern(s) that can be readily identified, repair as required.
4. If concern remains after the inspection, use the Rotunda New Generation Star (NGS) Tester connected to the Data Link Connector (DLC) to perform Data Link Diagnostic Test. If after performing Data Link Diagnostic Test, the NGS responds with NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIPPED for steering column/ignition/lighting control module, go to Pinpoint Test A. A: No Communication W/Column/Ignition/Lighting Module
If the Data Link Diagnostic Test passes, retrieve continuous Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and execute self-test diagnostics for steering column ignition/lighting control module.
5. If self-test is passed and no DTCs are retrieved, go to the Symptom Chart to continue diagnostics. Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
6. If DTCs are retrieved, go to the Steering Column/Ignition/Lighting Control (SCIL) Module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics. Diagnostic Trouble Code Tests and Associated Procedures
