Troubleshooting (Start Here)
Special Tools:
1. Verify the customer's concern by operating the brake shift interlock or the transmission control switch to duplicate the condition.
2. Inspect to determine if one of the following apply:
3. If the inspection reveals an obvious concern(s) that can be readily identified, service as required.
4. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the Rotunda New Generation Star (NGS) Tester to the Data Link Connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the NGS menu. If the NGS does not communicate with the vehicle:
- check that the program card is properly installed.
- check the connections to the vehicle.
- check the ignition switch position.
If the NGS still does not communicate with the vehicle; refer to Powertrain Management.

5. Perform the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST using the NGS. If the NGS responds with:
- CKT 914 and CKT 915 = ALL MODULES NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIPPED, go to Communication System Diagnostics to diagnose network concern.
- NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIPPED for the Steering Column/Ignition/Lighting control module (SCIL), go to Pinpoint Test A.
- NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIPPED for the Message Center Module (MCM), go to Pinpoint Test B.
B: Transmission Fluid/Oil Temperature (TFT/TOT) Sensor
- SYSTEM PASSED for the steering column/ignition/lighting control module (SCIL), retrieve and record the continuous Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs, then execute Self Test Diagnostics for the steering column/ignition/lighting control module (SCIL).
- SYSTEM PASSED for the message center module (MCM), retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs, then execute Self Test Diagnostics for the message center module (MCM).
6. If the SCIL DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Steering Column/Ignition/Lighting Control Module (SCIL) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics.

If the message center module DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Message Center Module (MCM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics.

7. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, go to the Symptom Chart to continue diagnostics.
