Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

1. Verify the customer's concern by operating the power seat(s) to duplicate the condition.
2. Inspect to determine if one of the mechanical or electrical concerns apply.

VISUAL INSPECTION CHART

3. If the inspection reveals obvious concern(s) that can be readily identified, repair as necessary.

WARNING: THE RESTRAINT SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC TOOL IS FOR RESTRAINT SYSTEM SERVICE ONLY. REMOVE FROM VEHICLE PRIOR TO ROAD USE. FAILURE TO REMOVE COULD RESULT IN INJURY AND POSSIBLE VIOLATION OF VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS.

NOTE:
^ If a seat equipped with a seat mounted side airbag system is being serviced the airbag system must be deactivated per the deactivation procedure contained in Air Bag Systems.
^ Airbag simulators (restraint system diagnostic tools) MUST be installed under the seats in the side airbag to floor connector.
^ Diagnostics may be performed on seat systems other than the side airbag system (lumbar, climate controlled, heated, power seat track) with the seat installed in the vehicle as long as the restraint system diagnostic tool is installed under the seat in the side airbag to floor connector.
^ After diagnosing/repairing a seat system other than the side airbag system the restraint system diagnostic tool must be removed before operating the vehicle.
^ Diagnostics or repairs are not to be performed on a side airbag system with the seat in the vehicle. Prior to attempting to diagnose/repair the side airbag system the seat must be removed from the vehicle and the restraint system diagnostic tool must be installed in side airbag connector at the floor connector. The restraint system diagnostic tool must be removed prior to operating the vehicle.

4. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the scan tool menu. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
^ check that the program card is properly inserted
^ check the connections to the vehicle
^ check the ignition switch position

If the scan tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the scan tool manual.

5. Perform the Data Link Diagnostic Test using the scan tool. If the scan tool responds with:
^ CKT914 and CKT 915 = ALL MODULE NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, go to Communication System Diagnostics in Module Communications Network (Information Bus) to diagnose the network concern.
^ NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for the Driver Seat Module (DSM), go to Pinpoint Test B. Test B: No Communication With the Driver Seat Module - Unable to Perform the Driver Seat Module Self-Test
^ NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for the Driver Door Module (DDM), go to Pinpoint Test A. Test A: No Communication With The Driver Door Module - Unable To Perform The Driver Door Module Self-Test
^ If the DSM is not listed for a communication concern, turn the ignition switch to RUN, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs, then execute the Self-Test diagnostics for the DSM. If the DSM exits the diagnostic state during the self-test and returns to a normal operating state, go to Pinpoint Test B. Test B: No Communication With the Driver Seat Module - Unable to Perform the Driver Seat Module Self-Test
^ If the DDM is not listed for a communication concern, turn the ignition switch to RUN, make sure all doors are closed, retrieve and record the continuous Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs, then execute the Self-Test diagnostics for the DDM. If the DDM exits diagnostic state during the self-test and returns to normal operating state, go to Pinpoint Test A. Test A: No Communication With The Driver Door Module - Unable To Perform The Driver Door Module Self-Test
6. If the DSM DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Driver Seat Module (DSM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue the diagnostics. Driver Seat Module (DSM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index
7. If the DDM DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Driver Door Module (DDM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue the diagnostics. Driver Door Module (DDM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index
8. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, go to the Symptom Chart to continue diagnostics. Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
