Steering Column Shaft

Removal

1. CAUTION: When servicing an air bag-equipped vehicle that has been involved in a collision, check the air bag, sensors and wiring for damage. If the collision was severe enough to result in deployment of one or more air bags, the steering column intermediate shaft coupling (between the steering column and steering gear) must be replaced before the vehicle is driven. Failure of a damaged steering column intermediate shaft coupling can result in loss of vehicle control and may cause physical or property damage or both.

Remove the bolt from the upper steering column lower yoke-to-shaft connection. Collapse the steering column intermediate shaft coupling.

2. Remove three nuts retaining the primary steering column tube boot to the dash panel and remove the steering column tube boot.

3. CAUTION: Make sure the steering column is in the locked position or the lower end of the steering column is wired in a way to prevent the steering wheel from being turned, as air bag sliding contact will be damaged.

Remove the bolt retaining steering column intermediate shaft coupling to the steering gear input shaft.

4. From inside of the vehicle, remove the steering column intermediate shaft coupling.

Installation

1. Follow the removal procedure in reverse order.
