Fluid Level Check

Special Tools:

Check
1. Using the New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester, monitor the Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) using PID: TFT.
2. Start vehicle.
3. Engine speed at idle (approximately at 650 rpm). Run engine until the recommended TFT is between 27°C and 49°C (80°F - 120°F). The fluid level can be checked above 50°C (122°F) using this procedure.

4. Move the selector lever slowly, stopping in each gear.
5. Place selector lever in the PARK position.
6. Raise and support the vehicle.

7. Set vehicle as close to level as possible (+/- 2° to 3°). Optional, if needed, the special tool can be used to assist in leveling the vehicle.
8. Place a drain pan under the transmission.

9. With the transmission in the PARK position and the engine running, using a 3/16" Allen key, remove the fluid level indicator plug.
10. Allow the fluid to drain. Wait approximately one minute. When the fluid comes out as a thin stream or a drip it is at the correct level.
11. If no fluid has come out from the hole, fluid will need to be added.

12. Remove the fill plug.
13. Check the fluid temperature.

14. Note: At TFT temperatures between 27°C - 49°C (80°F - 120°F) when fluid starts to drain from the fluid level hole, the transmission is full. The fluid level can be checked above 50°C (122°F) using this procedure.

Fill transmission to the correct fluid level or until fluid starts to drain from the fluid level hole.
- Use MERCON (R) V Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-5-QM or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON (R) V.

15. Reinstall the fluid level indicator plug.

16. WARNING: Fluid temperatures above 50°C (122°F) may be too hot to handle.

Note: Do not heat fluid prior to adding it into the transmission.

In order to set the fluid levels for TFT temperatures above 50°C (122°F), additional fluid must be added. Refer to the chart for correct volume of ambient temperature fluid to add for the TFT indicated by the diagnostic equipment.

17. Reinstall the fill plug.
18. Lower the vehicle.
19. Check the operation of the transmission and inspect for leaks.
