TRANSMISSION - 5R55N - ORANGE "PRIOR TO REPAIR" TAGGED TRANSMISSION - SERVICE PROCEDURE

ISSUE
Selected 5R55N automatic transmissions installed in the Lincoln LS, and built between January 1, 2000 and July 31, will have an orange "PRIOR TO REPAIR" tag (Figure 1) on the fluid pan. The orange tag refers to TSB 00-03. This TSB article provides the necessary instructions to be carried out before calling the toll-free telephone number. Ford Motor Company is requesting dealership personnel contact Ford Motor Company prior to performing major overhauls on the 5R55N transmission.
ACTION
Prior to July 31, 2000, do not disassemble these orange tagged transmissions. Perform the required Steps listed in the Service Procedure following, record your findings, and verify an overhaul is required. Then contact Ford Motor Company at the toll-free number listed below if there is a concern involving one of these transmissions. This toll-tree number is to be used by all U.S., Mexican, and Canadian dealers for further service direction (not applicable outside the U.S., Mexico, and Canada). If you leave a message and don't receive a response in 15 minutes, proceed with normal repairs. After July 31, 2000, follow the 2000 LS Workshop Manual diagnosis and repair procedures.
Service Procedure
1. Check and record the transmission fluid level and condition.
a. If low, fill to the proper level and check for a leak
b. If a leak is the only concern, call the toll-free number prior to beginning the repair.
2. Using diagnostic equipment, complete the Quick Tests and record all codes.
3. If no fault codes are present, go to Step 5. If fault codes are present, complete the required engine pinpoint tests as listed in the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual first. Proceed with the required pinpoint tests for the transmission found in the Workshop Manual. Repair all NON-transmission codes and verify if the transmission symptom still exists
4. If a transmission symptom still exists, refer to Diagnosis By Symptom Routines in the Workshop Manual to determine what components internal to the transmission may be causing the concern. If internal components are indicated, install the appropriate diagnostic equipment that allows you to control transmission operations. Using the appropriate procedure for the selected equipment, road test to verify transmission operation.
5. If the transmission fails to operate and requires an overhaul, call Ford Motor Company toll-free at 1-800-853-1973 between the hours of 7:30am and 4:00pm EST (all U.S. and Canadian dealers). The following information is a mandatory requirement when calling the toll-free number: Transmission service tag information, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), Fluid level and condition, transmission operation verification results. If there is a service concern involving one of the following transmission models (refer to Application Chart), call the toll-free number between the hours of 7:30am and 4:00pm EST Monday through Friday (a recorder is on 24 hours per day).
